DYNAMIC DESIGNS LTD

In many regions, particularly in developing countries, waste management poses a significant challenge, leading to environmental pollution and health hazards. In Rwanda’s Musanze District, the accumulation of waste has not only marred the landscape but also affected the livelihoods of local communities. Germain Muhire recognized this pressing issue and sought to transform the perception of waste from a mere nuisance into a valuable resource that could foster economic growth and environmental sustainability.

“Waste isn’t just waste—it’s a raw material waiting for a story to be told,” says Germain Muhire, the visionary founder of Dynamic Designs Ltd. From his base in Rwanda’s Musanze District, Germain transforms discarded materials into eco-friendly home décor, furniture, and custom art, redefining how we view waste.

Growing up, Germain witnessed the devastating effects of pollution on his community and felt a deep urge to make a difference. “My goal was to create something beautiful out of the ugly reality of waste,” he explains. In 2023, this dream became a reality when he launched Dynamic Designs Ltd., combining his artistic passion with a commitment to environmental sustainability.

His journey gained momentum after joining the TEF-UNDP Aguka Programme in 2023. With a $3,000 grant and expert training, Germain formalized his operations and scaled his business. “The grant gave us legitimacy and opened new doors,” he says. Since then, he has registered his company, created five part-time jobs, and increased revenue by 62%, generating $5,000 in income.

But Germain’s vision goes beyond profits. He uses his business as a platform to educate others, running workshops that teach young people how to turn waste into art. “Seeing their excitement and creativity reminds me why I started this journey,” he proudly shares.

Despite facing challenges like the need for a dedicated production space, Germain has found innovative solutions. He showcases his products by partnering with local eco-friendly shops while minimizing costs. “It’s about working smarter while building for the future,” he says.

For Germain, waste is more than what we throw away—an opportunity to create, inspire, and transform. “The world is full of waste, but it’s also full of opportunities,” he reflects. With determination and creativity, Germain proves that sustainability and success can go hand in hand—one recycled masterpiece at a time.

Germain Muhire’s success story with Dynamic Designs Ltd. is a powerful example of how innovative thinking can address environmental challenges while creating economic opportunities. His journey has been significantly supported by key partners, including the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Union (EU), and the Government of Rwanda. These organizations have played a vital role in empowering entrepreneurs like Germain, providing the necessary resources and training to drive sustainable change. By transforming waste into art, Germain not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also inspires others to recognize the potential within their communities. His story is a testament to the idea that with the right support and vision, sustainability and success can indeed go hand in hand.

ILBA PRODUCTS LTD

Across the world, a few aspects effortlessly bring humanity together, including music, food, sports, and in this case, hair. For decades, African women have worn their natural hair with pride, but over the years, challenges, such as the lack of African hair products prevailed.

In Kigali’s Gasabo district, a passion for natural hair care and a drive to address unmet needs birthed a thriving business, ILBA Products Ltd. Founded by Izere Laure Bella Ange in 2022, this innovative company specialises in manufacturing natural hair products using agricultural produce as the main ingredients.

Motivated by her journey of seeking effective, natural hair care solutions, Izere combined research and creativity to launch a brand that celebrates the health and authenticity of natural hair.  But ILBA’s journey truly soared in 2023, thanks to the support of the Aguka Program, a youth empowering collaboration implemented by UNDP Rwanda and the Ministry of Youth and Arts (MOYA), while being funded by the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) and the European Union (EU).

Before the Aguka support, ILBA Products was focused solely on manufacturing, employing three full-time staff and generating RWF 1 million in monthly revenue. The business had long envisioned expanding into the hairdressing sector, but for long, it was a dream that felt out of reach.

With the training, funding, and mentorship offered by the Aguka Program, ILBA unlocked its potential. The financial support accelerated the launch of a trendy hairdressing salon, which not only diversified the business but also elevated its market presence. Training content provided invaluable insights into business planning while networking with other entrepreneurs inspired innovative problem-solving techniques.

Today, ILBA products stand as proof of the power of determination and support. With five full-time employees and a tripled monthly revenue of RWF 3 million, the company is flourishing. The newly opened salon has become a hub for young, talented women to showcase their skills, contributing to youth employment and economic empowerment.

The journey hasn’t been without challenges. Building a capable team remains an ongoing task, but ILBA has embraced strategies such as staff training and rigorous recruitment processes to overcome these hurdles.

Izere’s gratitude for the Aguka Program is palpable: “The support has been transformative. I’m excited for ILBA’s future and the continued growth we can achieve together.”

UBUDASA PRODUCTS LTD

In recent years, multiple disease outbreaks and health emergencies have occurred in Rwanda and beyond, including COVID-19, MPOX, Ebola, and, more recently, the Marburg disease. Kwitonda, a resident of Musanze District, studied the situation and wanted to contribute to the solution, which is how Ubudasa Products Ltd was born.

He aimed to enhance public health and promote sustainability through eco-friendly personal care and household hygiene products. This initiative emerged from a deep understanding of the pressing need for high-quality, locally produced goods that not only cater to consumer demands but also contribute to the welfare of the Rwandan economy.

Furthermore, sustainability remains at the core of UBUDASA’s mission. The company is committed to using biodegradable ingredients and promoting eco-friendly practices, such as its innovative dispensing solution, Robinet de Savon, which minimizes waste and encourages responsible consumption. Rather than selling its products in plastic containers, UBUDASA encourages its clients to carry reusable containers into which it pours cleaning supplies, educating them on the importance of reusing packaging and reducing plastic waste.

As a result, UBUDASA products have become essential in protecting communities, showcasing the company’s commitment to public health and safety while participating in environmental protection acts.

In 2023, UBUDASA’s journey transformed when Denis participated in the Aguka competition. His innovative business ideas were recognized among the top 100, earning him a grant of $3,000. This funding was instrumental in stabilizing the business and catalyzing growth. Aguka is a youth program that aims to empower youth with skills and financing.

Before the grant, UBUDASA struggled with limited resources and a small workforce of just 3 temporary employees. However, with the financial support and training skills from Aguka, the company expanded its team to 20 employees, significantly boosting job creation for the youth in the local community. This expansion provided employment opportunities and enhanced the livelihoods of families, contributing to the overall economic development of the region.

Since receiving the AGUKA grant, UBUDASA has experienced remarkable revenue growth, increasing from an average of Rwf 300,000 per month to Rwf 1,000,000—a staggering 70% increase. This surge in revenue can be attributed to enhanced production capacity, improved product quality, and access to new markets. The grant allowed UBUDASA to invest in essential machinery, raw materials, and employee training, which has been pivotal in improving operational efficiency and product offerings.

The training provided through the Aguka program has equipped the UBUDASA team with vital skills in manufacturing, marketing, and financial management. This knowledge has empowered the workforce to optimize production processes, implement effective marketing strategies, and establish a more organized financial structure. As a result, the company has improved its product quality and strengthened its market presence, allowing it to reach a broader customer base.

Despite the challenges posed by the market dynamics, including increased competition and sourcing raw materials, UBUDASA has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. The company has joined the Zamukana Ubuziranenge program to enhance the quality assurance of its products, ensuring they meet elevated safety and performance standards. Additionally, UBUDASA has focused on building partnerships with local suppliers to secure raw materials, thereby supporting the local economy and reducing import dependency.

In conclusion, UBUDASA Products Ltd shows just how powerful it can be to invest in young people through programs such as Aguka. With the right support, funding, training, and mentorship, youth like Denis Kwitonda can turn big challenges into bigger opportunities, helping their communities and boosting the economy.

When the Tony Elumelu Foundation collaborates with partners such as the EU, UNDP, and the Government of Rwanda, investing in young entrepreneurs goes beyond helping individuals and becomes about driving real change. UBUDASA’s story proves that with a little help, youth can create jobs, protect the environment, and improve lives, building a brighter future for Rwanda and beyond.
